I guess the question now is why I had to buy this device. So, I needed internet to activate a device that could bring me back onto the internet.

A quick check on the internet revealed that in order to activate it, an internet connection is required so that the system can download the driver from the repository.

On Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, it was a little bit involved because I didn’t know how to do it in the first place.Ī quick trip to the Software & Updates on Ubuntu, specifically the Additional Drivers tab, I saw the option for a proprietary Broadcom driver but I was not able to activate it. I found the driver on the vendor’s website, installed it, restarted the OS, then it was ready to go. This happened both on my Win10 OS and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

After placing the card into my PCIe slot, I turned on my PC and I was not able to even select WiFi network. I just bought a new PCIe WiFi adapter for my PC, the TP-Link Archer T6E. “ifconfig” only shows my eth0 and loopback interfaces. Here was the problem. Lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82830 830 Chipset Host Bridge (rev 02) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82830 830 Chipset AGP Bridge (rev 02) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801CA/CAM USB Controller #1 (rev 01) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge (rev 41) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801CAM ISA Bridge (LPC) (rev 01) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801CAM IDE U100 Controller (rev 01) 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801CA/CAM AC’97 Audio Controller (rev 01) 00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corporation 82801CA/CAM AC’97 Modem Controller (rev 01) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV11 (rev b2) 02:00.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c905C-TX/TX-M (rev 78) 02:01.0 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1420 PC card Cardbus Controller 02:01.1 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1420 PC card Cardbus Controller 07:00.0 Network controller: Texas Instruments ACX 111 54Mbps Wireless Interface I am trying this on my old Dell 4100 (HD install) and after I follow this process, there is nothing in the additional drivers but the Nvidia-96 drivers. They are getting better but Atheros and Intel chipset are the way to go – IMO Broadcom has not exactly been helpful with their devices in the past. final note: I’d just pick up a cheap supported USB WiFi adapter rather than mess with making a Broadcom chip work. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Follow this link for information on installing the latest firmware for your device That should keep you busy for a while. Some devices can be updated to Firmware rev 04 if it is supported by the B43 driver. Firmware rev 03 devices will only work with the B43-legacy driver. Compare your results with this list and/or To further confuse the issue, your firmware revision will make a difference on whether to use the B43 or B43-legacy driver.

If you don’t have one of the STA supported devices, you will need to check to see if it supported by the B43 or B43-legacy drivers. It should look something like this 0000:02:02.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 03) Now you know what chipset you actually have. To verify your card, open up a terminal and run lspci -vnn | grep 14e4 That command is going to output information for your device. However, if the STA driver doesn’t work, your Linux Mint installation includes bcmwl-modialiases for the Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA driver that contains a a list of pci id’s which makes it possible to detect the model of a Broadcom wireless card. It’s not included with Linux Mint and you need an internet connection to download it before you can activate it. In fact, you may just need to connect to the internet so you can enable the STA driver.
